Stephane Grappelli’s Violin

When I took up the violin at the age of 12 I started listening to other violinists. There were two that stood out at the time – Yehudi Menuhin and Stephane Grappelli. Menuhin was master of the classical realm, while Grappelli had no match in his world of jazz. But between the two, is was Grappelli’s singing tone, lyrical phrasing and unbridled creativity that caught my ear. » Read the rest of this entry «

Where Have All Your Customers Gone?

Fresh Mugs - Facebook appsSome things stay the same and never change. Good manners, what people really want, red wine with steak and how much the Rolling Stones rock. But some things change no matter how many books are written on the subject.

For example, sales.  » Read the rest of this entry «

How to Design Your Own Logo

September 19th, 2011 § 2 comments § permalink

No, I’m not shooting myself in the foot. There are times when people need a logo for a new startup or a side venture, but don’t want to spend the money paying someone to do it. Fair enough. The problem with this is that they want to do it themselves. » Read the rest of this entry «

Writing Good: The English Language in the Internet Age – Part One

Words 4 the webwise with Simon Rose

A regular column by author, Simon Rose.

We’ve all seen those funny signs and ads, featuring incorrect translations in non-English speaking countries or more alarmingly, from parts of the world where English is spoken and where the company or organization should know better. The poor use of English also infiltrated the corporate world’s internal memos and documents quite some time ago. People simply don’t understand their own language anymore. They’re also unaware of what words actually mean or can imply if used incorrectly, leading to comical and at times dangerous assumptions.

What would you do for a dollar?

What would you do for a dollar?

What would you do for a dollar?

It seems that some people are working way too hard these days. Or they aren’t working at all.

Scriptlance is a website that allows competing freelancers to bid on available projects. The scope is published on the site and members post what they are willing to take for the job. Presumably the lowest bid wins. It’s just like eBay except the other way around and without the mutual satisfaction.

Leighton Hubbell drew my attention to one such job. The request was for 100 ‘logo icons’ for up to $500. I think that means icons. It might be small logos, I’m not sure. Anyway, one person’s bid was $100. For 100 icons. I’m not sure how complex the icons are meant to be, but that’s still well below minimum wage.

If you still think crowd sourcing is OK, consider how this behaviour is driving down quality, pushing up expectations and stealing from your friendly neighbourhood small business. Unless you happen to be in the license plate stamping business, I’m sure the competition where you live is making more than prison inmates.

When is Art Terrorism?

September 8th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

Incendiary indeed!Los Angeles artist Alex Schaeffer didn’t expect to be stopped by the police while painting.

A concerned citizen (for want of a more accurate term) alerted the police to Schaeffer’s activity on a street outside a bank. Quietly painting an impression of the bank building in front of him, Schaeffer suddenly found himself explaining to police why he had painted the roof on fire. » Read the rest of this entry «
