The first thing you do when handed a business card is feel it. You haven't even read it yet, and you already have an idea of quality. Thin, flimsy card is all that can fit through most ink jets or laser printers - the office or home type models, that is. If your printer offers to use a laser, they are using a different kind of printer. So if your business is indeed flimsy and unreliable, using DIY business cards might help. For everyone else, use a real printer.

What you need is a vector of your logo. A vector is not made up of dots, like a JPEG or other bitmap image. Instead, it is a file of data that recreates the logo at any size. You could literally enlarge your logo to the size of a blimp without losing resolution or quality.

So if your business is meant to be unique, why would you choose a logo from a draw of other rejects and try to make it stick? Your logo, along with your other marketing materials, has to fit your business. Your brochure, website design, illustrations used in your materials, promotional videos, copywriting style - absolutely everything has to fit your business. The only way to do that is to design it to fit your business, not the other way round. I don't think this is a design issue, it's just common sense.

If businesses are building their own free sites, let them. Using templates with systems like Wordpress just about guarantees that the site will look good, work consistently and be found by search engines (good SEO). But what is really going to keep people coming back to the site and make the site either sink or swim is content. The design gets people in the door and makes the site accessible, but it's the stuff inside that truly matters.

When I took up the violin at the age of 12 I started listening to other violinists. There were two that stood out at the time - Yehudi Menuhin and Stephane Grappelli. Menuhin was master of the classical realm, while Grappelli had no match in his world of jazz. But between the two, is was Grappelli's singing tone, lyrical phrasing and unbridled creativity that caught my ear.
